"Die Yuppie Scum"
TRY LIVING IN INDIANA and you'll probably be less hard on Yuppies. But I understand Friday's Die Yuppie Scum rally. Cities need diversity, and we've passed Manhattan's tipping point for yuppies and the rich. If something doesn't drive New York real estate prices down, there will come a time in the future when the city's not worth living in, even for those who can afford it.
Cities need blue-collar workers, artists and bohemians, and they all want to live in New York. But it's getting harder and harder. It wasn't that long ago that people were squatting in buildings now going for $1,200 a foot.

Does urbanism really mean picking perfect people (or I guess a perfect mix of people) to populate perfect cities?
Notwithstanding the disquieting thought of urban critic pronouncing on having too many "undesirables" and the policy recommendations which flow, this seems to get the project of urban planning backwards. How does it make sense to prioritize a vision of a perfect city over the actual residents (real and prospective) who the city is meant to serve? I call hubris. If the urban-planner is not serving the actual people who live in the city or the people / future generations who might consider living in the city, what exactly is he serving. Seems like his own grand aesthetic vision of what a city should be, or an undemocratic view of the way the world should be.
I'm not saying that I like the idea of living in a community comprised exclusively of lawyers and bankers. I'm taking issue with your post because I think it exceeds the "critical-jurisdiction" that an urbanist is allowed.

No, urbanism does not "mean picking perfect people (or I guess a perfect mix of people) to populate perfect cities."
